Kaminsky wrote the letter to try to find an explanation, especially after learning of one of the sex offenders. Kirchner said he documented three registered level 3 sex offenders at the hotel, using the New York State Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation database, though none are currently there. In February, a spokeswoman for the Homeless Services Department confirmed that a man and woman, both in their 30s, were living at the Holiday Inn.
Homeless men who stay on the Rockaway Turnpike are a recurring problem in Hempstead Village, according to the New York State Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation. Last year, the region had 59,887 people living there, compared with 57,737 in 2010, the highest number in more than 30 years.
